The three-masted sailing ship Mexico ran aground 200 yards of the beach in Long Beach during a nor'easter on January 2, 1837. Over 100 perished. The recovered were buried in a mass grave in Rockville Cemetery(Lynbrook, New York) marked by a large stone obelisk. The marker also honors those that perished (also buried) on the ship Bristol a month previously off Rockaway.
